Glossary

Alternating Air Pressure Alternating inflation and deflation of cells to constantly change pressure points and promote circulation. Air is pumped in sequence into cells that are placed parallel to each other inside the mattress. A single cell slowly deflates, re-inflates, and then the adjacent cell does the same, slowly, up and down the mattress.
Auto-comfort Preset internal pressure modes (‘soft’, ‘medium’ or ‘firm’)
Auto-set No need to input patient weight, the mattress automatically adjusts to the patient's distribution
Auto-upright When the bed is in an upright position, the pump will automatically increase the pressure to prevent ‘bottoming out’
Constant Low Pressure (CLP) Therapy Increased patient areas in contact with the support surface, whereby the pressure at every contact point is reduced
Cycle Time The speed at which the inflation process cycles from one end of the mattress to the other end. It can be adjusted or set on most mattress systems
Dartex Weldable fabric which reduces the risk of infection by acting as a barrier to fluid ingress and contamination. Also easy to clean and highly durable
Dynamic Therapy The inflation and deflation of air cells to stimulate blood flow
GELTEX Clinically proven, breathable, medical grade foam
Hybrid Mattress Offers both a non-powered or alternating pressure solution in the one mattress
Intelligent Pressure Sensing Technology (IPS) Responds to patient movements on the mattress by automatically adjusting internal mattress pressure.
Interface Pressure The pressure exerted by the compression system over the surface of skin
Low Pressure Alarms Audible and visual alert to notify when abnormal internal pressure occurs
Mattress Replacement Entire mattress with built in pressure relief which would replace an existing mattress
Max Inflate Inflate the entire mattress to be suitable for nursing purposes
Memory Recall Restores to the previous setting automatically after abnormal power outage
Non-Powered Mattress No pump or power required for operation
Overlay Device applied over an existing mattress which is designed to provide added pressure relief and comfort
Safe Working Load (SWL) The maximum safe force that a piece of equipment can exert to hold without breaking
Square Air Cell Square shaped cells with no gap between them, delivering maximum support and pressure redistribution while patient is lying down. This also gives additional safety for egress and ingress.
True Low Air Loss Provides airflow through tiny holes in the mattress top surface to help keep skin dry, as well as relieve interface pressure. “True” low-air-loss is defined by mattress system features such as air flow volume, cover fabric, or air loss method. Higher powered pumps are required to attain True-Low-Air Loss.
Waterlow Score Gives an estimated risk for the development of a pressure sore in a given patient
